CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY
OF
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
is an important person in American History whose name is
very familiar to most students, but whose life and legacy
are too often a confusing mass of legends and myths. Few
students know or understand what Dr. King did and how his
actions impacted the United States and people around the
world.
Majestic
Butterfly® provides student activities and community
initiatives to honor Dr. King, preserve his legacy and educate
today’s students about his life, his work and the
National Holiday named in his memory.
The Student
Activities CD, “Celebrating
the National MLK Holiday”, has been
created for teachers of students in grades 7-12. It was
designed to engage students in a variety of class activities
and projects to celebrate and honor the life of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., and preserve his legacy.
Students will discover the
rich tapestry of the life and work of Dr. King as they develop
and share their talents. This innovative project includes
12 “ready-made” activities. Some are individual,
others are collaborative and still others are cross-curricular.
The activities require varying amounts of time. You may
want to use one set of activities one year and a different
set the following year.
The activities of this disk are designed
to make Dr. King a more personal and authentic figure of
history, and help your students realize that his work continues
to impact their lives. Our hope is that this generation
of young people will have an historically accurate and realistic
picture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the man and the
person of history.
